Snowshoeing is an age-old winter sport. It’s not a sport I would have found myself trying…straight up a mountain. I’ve been skiing now for 2 seasons and love it! But I wanted to try something new this season, so I tried snowshoeing. Unlike skiing or snowboarding, snowshoeing does not require extensive lessons, making it a delightful winter family activity suitable for all ages and skill levels. (My youngest even goes with his daycare through the woods near his school.)
Garmisch’s scenic trails provide a magical setting where laughter blends with the crunch of snow underfoot. From wide-open valleys to sheltered woodlands, the area around Garmisch has a variety of trails to accommodate both leisurely strolls and more vigorous treks. I opted to hire an adventure tour guide company in Garmisch called White Mountain. They were fantastic; they provided all the gear and snacks and guided us through all the local trails. We were given a few options on our adventure, I decided to go with the 4-hour hike up the Hausberg mountain. (Where Garmisch Classic, the famous ski resort, is located.) It was kinda cool snowshoeing beside the same trails I ski down daily.

If you decide to use White Mountain Adventures, they’ll provide all the equipment for you. Although it’s not hard to rent snowshoes in Garmisch, almost all the ski schools have the option.
Dress in Layers
- The weather can be unpredictable, and activity levels might fluctuate, so wear clothing that can be easily added or removed to maintain comfort. Snowshoeing is an exercise, so you’re going to break a sweat! I decided to change my clothes when we reached the top of the mountain because when I slowed down, I quickly got cold! Follow Marked Trails
- Garmisch has marked trails designed explicitly for snowshoeing, ensuring your outing is safe and enjoyable. Most of the trails are labeled really good. I hired an adventure tour guide to use him for all the local gems. (Which worked)
Pack Essentials:
- Staying hydrated and energized is crucial. Bring water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and perhaps a thermos with a warm beverage.

- Photographs are a must! The landscape is rich with picturesque views that make lasting memories. Videos too! I regret not getting more pictures and videos of myself snowshoeing up the mountain. I used a Go Pro and that was a lot of fun!

Snowshoeing in Garmisch is a perfect activity for families with children. Kids can have fun spotting animal tracks in the snow, playing games like hide-and-seek along the trails, and learning about the local flora and fauna from knowledgeable guides.
For those with younger children, there are also options for shorter and easier routes that are still just as rewarding. And after a day of snowshoeing, warm up with some hot cocoa or Glühwein (mulled wine) or hot chocolate at one of the many cozy mountain huts scattered throughout the area.
