Family Fun Hikes Near Garmisch, Germany

Hey, fellow nature enthusiasts! If you dream of fresh alpine air and quality family time, I’ve got some insider tips on the best family-friendly hikes around Garmisch, Germany, and its charming Austrian neighbor. These trails are breathtaking and so much fun for the kiddos (and us grown-ups too)! Here we go! I hope you enjoy and if you go on one of these hikes comment below and let me know what you think!

Mitteregg, Austria Family Fun Hike

This trail is so much fun! My boys are not always “excited” to go hiking, but they all got very excited when they started to hike this trail. This trail has a gold mining activity station. (I’m not going to lie; I stood there and found gold, too, for about 15 minutes) There’s a huge water station where kids can pull and put blocks in the water to make the water fill up or drain. This is so much fun during a hot summer day.  There are many more activities along the way, but I don’t want to give up all the fun!

Things to know before you go

  • Pack 2 Euro coins for the wooden ball drop. This is for the ball needed for the maze; if your kids are like my kids, pack a couple of coins so every kid can have a ball.
  • This trail is 100% stroller-friendly.
  • Pack lunch; along the trail are a couple of picnic tables and places to lay out blankets.
  • The trail is dog-friendly but make sure that your dog is on a leash at all times.
  • Directions to the trail can be found here
  • 45 minute drive from Garmisch, Germany

Ehrwald, Austria Family Fun Hike

It’s just a skip, hop, and a jump away from Garmisch. (It’s about a 20-minute drive.) This family-friendly hike can take you all the way to a waterfall in the summer! This hike is super kid-friendly but not stroller-friendly. I would suggest baby-wearing or only taking children that can walk (4 and up)

This hike has logs you can climb inside, a water station and a cold water walk on river rocks (Great parent/ child activity!) Lots of fun if you’re in the Garmisch, Germany, area looking for a little bit of a change but don’t want to drive too far. This is my go-to place!

Things to know before you go

  • Pack water; there are not many places to get water!
  • Baby wear if possible.
  • Bring friends! This hike is a lot of fun with friends.
  • Directions to the trail can be found here. (Once you are standing in front of the Bahn station, you’ll go to the left of the building and towards the trees, and you’ll see an entrance into the woods. Go through the woods and you’ll see a little wood house to the right with directions and pencils for the trail.

Bieberweir, Austria Family Fun Hike

This is one of our favorite towns to ski; this is actually the town where my kids and I learned how to ski our first year in Garmisch. (holds a special place in our hearts) When I learned that Bieberweir had a family fun trail in the summer, I knew we needed to try it! I must admit this isn’t my favorite family fun hike; I felt it was missing a lot.  It didn’t have as much entertainment and stations as other family fun hikes I mentioned in the blog post.

This hike is mostly a big loop around the tiny city of Bieberweir through the woods and on a bit of the ski run. (Seeing it in the summer vs seeing it in the winter was a fun experience!) So, if you’ve skied Bieberweir in the winter, I suggest going on this hike.

Things to know before you go

  • Pack water; there are not many places to get water!
  • Baby wear if possible, but a jogging stroller would also work!)
  • Directions can be found here

Farchant, Germany Family Fun Hike & Playground

Farchant is located about 15 minutes from Garmisch, Germany. It’s my favorite town within driving distance of Garmisch. It’s also home to my favorite swimming pool in the area. Learn about that here.

I love this family fun hike to the waterfall in Farchant; this hike is super fun after a long rain. (The waterfall flows super fast, and you can even get a little wet from the water bouncing off the air) A stroller makes This hike impossible, so I suggest bringing children five and older or preparing babywear.

At the end of the hike, you’ll find my favorite playground in the area! When the cows come out of the barn in the spring, cows will be surrounded by the entire playground. It’s so cool! The playground also has a little cow watering station where the cows come up to get water, and the children can see the cows up close. My boys love it!

Things to know before you go

  • Pack water; there are not many places to get water!
  • Baby wear if possible, but a jogging stroller would also work!)
  • Directions can be found here (This is actually the directions to the swimming pool, but the park is right before you get to this location on the left. You can also park in this parking lot and walk over.
