Venice, Italy

Tyler’s parents came to visit us in Slovenia in October, and the one thing that they really really wanted to do was go to Venice, Italy. We were lucky enough to only live 2 hours away, and it was so close I honestly couldn’t say no.

Below is everything I did/wish I would have done. I hope this list makes visiting Venice with your children easier.

  1. It’s so crowded! I feel like Venice has more Americans squeezed into that tiny city than any city in America! I’m not even kidding, it was like I drove 2 hours and I was in America!
  2. If you drive to Venice, you have to park your car in a parking garage on the outskirts of the city and take a water taxi to downtown Venice, but just because your in Venice doesn’t mean you can “walk” everywhere the streets are made of water, so if you want to go to the other side of Venice you have to take another water taxi.
  3. I highly suggest you find a hotel that has a free taxi to and from the city center, we stayed at the JW and they had two free taxis that took you to other sides of Venice.
  4. Pack light because what you bring to Venice you have to carry through the city to your hotel.
  5. Wear your walking shoes! You will be walking a lot!
  6. Don’t bring the stroller, there were so many steps in Venice that a stroller would have been a nightmare. I highly suggest if you have a baby to bring a baby carrier and if you have a toddler invest in a toddler carrier. We have had both the toddler Tula, and the LilleBaby and really enjoyed both for our almost 3-year-old son.
  7. Bring cash (Euro) some places won’t accept cards so make sure you have enough cash on you to buy things you might need.
  8. Have a plan and know where you want to go in the city
  9. Make sure to check for major events going on in the city… I failed to look into this and we visited Venice during a marathon… LOL
  10. Make sure to pack snacks, because you might be in a water taxi for about 30-45 mins and your kids might start to get crazy!

After the trip was over Tyler and I both looked at each other and said “That wasn’t as bad as we thought” however there was 4 adults and 2 children so that may have also helped. If you are planning a trip and have any questions please feel free to reach out to me.

Here are some pictures I took while on our trip. Note most of these were taken with my cell phone because I didn’t bring my camera everywhere with me since it was so crowded, and I had 2 boys to hold/ keep up with.

Heath started throwing up the peace signs after seeing so many tourists in Venice doing it! I about died when he did this! This is also an example of how crowded the water taxis can get in October!
